IBM Mould Steel Selection:

H13 vs P20 vs S136 for IBM Tooling

Mould steel selection for injection blow moulding tooling determines IBM injection cavity dimensional stability, surface polishability for clarity and texture, corrosion resistance to polymer degradation gases, and IBM mould service life across millions of PP, HDPE and PCTG production cycles. Korea Ever-Power Ansan-si selects H13, P20 and S136 tool steel for different IBM container programme requirements based on production volume, material chemistry, surface finish specification and cavity count economics.

H13 TOOL STEEL

HRC 48–52

Korea Ever-Power standard IBM mould steel. H13 chromium hot-work tool steel provides excellent thermal fatigue resistance (resists thermal cycling from cold polymer melt contact), high hardness at IBM operating temperature, good polishability to Ra 0.025–0.05μm for cosmetic PCTG IBM moulds, and 2–5 million IBM cycle service life for PP and HDPE IBM on ZQ machines. Standard Korea Ever-Power specification for all IBM injection cavity and blow mould cavity tooling

P20 TOOL STEEL

HRC 28–34

Pre-hardened mould steel: P20 supplied at HRC 28–34 (no post-machining heat treatment required). Lower cost than H13 at same cavity volume. Used for IBM trial moulds, low-volume programmes (<500,000 cycles) and blow mould cavities where dimensional change from heat treatment warpage is a concern. Polishability limited vs H13; not recommended for PCTG IBM clarity or corrosive polymer (PVC) IBM

S136 STAINLESS

HRC 48–54

Stainless mould steel (AISI 420 equivalent, 13% Cr): highest corrosion resistance for IBM applications where halogen-containing polymer processing produces HCl or HF gas that corrodes standard H13 tool steel. Premium polishability (Ra ≤0.010μm SPI A1 standard) for ultra-clarity PCTG IBM pharmaceutical vial and luxury cosmetic IBM. 2–4 million IBM cycle life, higher mould cost vs H13

SELECTION DRIVERS

4 Primary

Four primary IBM mould steel selection drivers at Korea Ever-Power: (1) surface finish requirement (Ra target for IBM container clarity or texture); (2) production volume (IBM cycle count over programme life); (3) polymer chemistry (PP, HDPE or PCTG corrosion aggressiveness to mould steel); (4) mould investment budget (P20 < H13 < S136 at equal cavity volume, with H13 providing best overall IBM value for most Korea Ever-Power ZQ programmes)
